Ha debuttato nel 1949 in <em>Der Freisch\u00fctz<\/em> di Weber, sempre a Dresda. Attivo soprattutto\u00a0 nei maggiori teatri di area tedesca, Adam ha particolarmente legato il suo nome al Festival di Bayreuth, dove si \u00e8 prodotto quasi ininterrottamente a partire dal 1952, quando vi esord\u00ec come Ortel in Die Meistersinger von N\u00fcrnberg per poi cantare nei pi\u00f9 importanti ruoli wagneriani.
