La stagione in corso ha visto la pubblicazione del suo primo recital intitolato <em>An American Song Album <\/em>in collaborazione col pianista Bradley Moore per la Pentatone Records. Partendo da queste scelte, due lavori di autori americani, ho cominciato a scegliare i titoli che compongono il resto dell&#8217;album.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>C&#8217;\u00e8 una raccolta tra quelle da lei interpretate in <em>An American Song Album<\/em> che lei ama particolarmente eseguire?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Ho appena citato le <em>Hermit Songs. <\/em>Le conosco da anni, fin da quando studiavo, le ho sentite eseguite da altri e non vedevo l&#8217;ora di poterle interpretare. Sono felicissima di averle anche registrate.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Tra gli autori presenti in questa raccolta troviamo il nome di Gordon Getty, del quale lei ha gi\u00e0 interpretato\u00a0 le\u00a0 opere <em>Plump Jack<\/em> e <em>The Little Match Girl<\/em>&#8230; Come \u00e8 nata questa collaborazione?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Tempo fa, sono stata chiamata a sostituire, nel ruolo di Tosca, un soprano che si era ammalato per la serata di apertura della stagione della San Francisco Opera. Gordon Getty era in teatro e, dopo lo spettacolo, mi volle conoscere. Da quel momento, Getty mi ha contattata e chiesto di interpretare suoi lavori. Un incontro che potrei definire &#8220;casuale&#8221;\u00a0 che mi ha dato un&#8217;importante opportunit\u00e0 artistica.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Il repertorio contemporaneo ha un particolare posto nella sua attivit\u00e0 artistica. Ama confrontarsi con autori attuali&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Non \u00e8 mai stata mia intenzione concentrarmi su lavori contemporanei; sono per\u00f2 all&#8217;interno dell&#8217; Adler Fellowship e Merola Program della San Francisco Opera, atti a valorizzare giovani composositori. Ho avuto cos\u00ec modo di affrontare molti lavori di autori. \u00c8 stata anche una sfida con me stessa: ho scoperto di riuscire a imparare questi ruoli velocemente e di riuscire anche a dare il giusto spessore a\u00a0 personaggi nuovi. La cosa mi ha fatto molto piacere!<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Ha preso parte a prime assolute, con ruoli scritti appositamente sulla sua personalit\u00e0 teatrale e vocale?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Si, nell&#8217;opera \u2018Heart of a Soldier\u2019, in prima mondiale nel\u00a0 2011 a San Francisco, ispirata agli attentati dell&#8217;11 settembre. Ho sempre per\u00f2 la gioia di cantare\u00a0 autori americani. Sar\u00f2 a\u00a0 Philadelphia per una serie di concerti da camera con musiche di Romee, Copland, Blitzstein e Thomson.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Lei canta un repertorio lirico alquanto variegato:\u00a0 opere di soprano lirico in Mozart, fino a ruoli pi\u00f9 drammatici: Puccini, Wagner e Strauss,\u00a0 che ci pare siano i suoi attuali autori d&#8217;opera preferiti&#8230; Cosa intende affrontare in futuro?<br \/>\n<\/strong>S<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">to approfondendo Strauss e Wagner prendendomi il mio tempo e decidendo cosa si adatti meglio alla mia voce &#8211; non voglio bruciarmi la carriera con scelte azzardate. Se tutto andr\u00e0 come spero, vedo sempre di pi\u00f9 Wagner nel mio futuro. Con calma e cura mi sto dedicando allo studio di Isolde.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Qual \u00e8 la sua idea sulla regia d&#8217;opera, quanto deve essere moderna? Si \u00e8 mai trovata in imbarazzo o difficolt\u00e0 nell&#8217;affrontare delle idee visive troppo dirompenti?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Penso che i registi possano e debbano spingersi fin dove la loro immaginazione li porta ENTRO I limiti, per\u00f2, di una narrazione filologicamente rispettosa. Se la storia si perde in un concept,\u00a0 la regia non sta pi\u00f9 rendendo un servizio al lavoro originale. Anche a me \u00e8 capitato, come molti cantanti, di provare perplessit\u00e0 e confusione riguardo a idee che mi venivano &#8220;spiegate&#8221; durante le riunioni di produzione. Rimpiango i tempi in cui tutti quelli che erano coinvolti nella produzione erano coinvolti anche nella visione artistica del prodotto finale che andava in scena.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong>Lei tiene anche delle masterclass. Cosa trova sia importante trasmettere ai giovani cantanti?<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Quando insegno, chiedo sempre ai miei studenti cosa vorrebbero affinare durante la masterclass. Gli studenti possono sapere di essere pi\u00f9 deboli sul versante della presenza scenica o della lingua\/dizione. Altri mi chiedono di voler essere aiutati ad affrontare frasi musicali con una migliore gestione del fiato. Verifico sempre le loro\u00a0 necessit\u00e0 e da l\u00ec partiamo. Non mi piace adottare lo stesso approccio con tutti i cantanti. Ognuno ha il proprio percorso; bisogna ascoltare i loro bisogni. Penso che la cosa pi\u00f9 importante da trasmettere ai cantanti emergenti sia la fiducia in quello che potr\u00e0 essere la loro professione. The current season marks the release of her first solo album entitled\u00a0<em>An American Song Album\u00a0<\/em>with pianist Bradley Moore on Pentatone Records. She graciously found some of her precious time to sit down for us and answer a few questions about her career.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">How did your last album An American Song Album\u00a0 originated? From there, as those two larger sets were written by Americans in English, I began to craft the rest of the album accordingly and we came up with the title.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Among the numbers included in An American Song Album, is there one that you do love performing?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">For me, the Hermit Songs were a dream come true to record and sing. I have known them and heard others perform them for years\u00a0 &#8211; all through college and in recital programs. I really wanted to get my hands on them. So happy to have done them.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Among the authors featured in this album, we can find Gordon Getty, whose operas Plump Jack e The little Match Girl you have already performed\u2026 How did this collaboration start?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Some years ago, I stepped into opening night of the San Francisco Opera season as \u2018Tosca\u2019 when a soprano had become ill. Gordon Getty was at that performance and made a point to greet me that evening at the opening night party. Since that time, Mr. Getty has reached out and asked me to collaborate on several of his own operas as well as standard opera repertoire. I could not be more grateful for that fortunate turn of events.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">The contemporary repertoire has a particular importance in your artistic path. Do you like focusing on contemporary works?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">I never \u2018intended\u2019 to focus on contemporary works, but as a member of both the Merola and Adler programs of San Francisco Opera, we were exposed to many works by contemporary composers. That time in my life was unforgettable and it was an honor to perform and remember Rick Rescorla for his heroic and life-saving actions that day.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">With regard to this, have you got new projects in the works?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">I don\u2019t, per se, have any contemporary operas in the works. I am performing a salon series in Philadelphia with works by composers like Rorem, Copland, Blitzstein and Thomson and that will be great fun.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Your operatic repertoire is is pretty varied, ranging from Mozart\u2019s soprano roles, to Puccini, Wagner and Strauss\u2019s more vocally dramatic roles, that you seem to prefer lately\u2026 What\u2019s in store for the future?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">For the future, I am delving into more Strauss and Wagner on my own time and deciding what fits into my voice in the appropriate way &#8211; keeping longevity of career in mind. If things go as I expect, I would like to see more Wagner in my immediate future. One role I\u2019m working diligently to study is Isolde.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">What\u2019s your idea of directing opera and how far directors can push themselves in terms of modernity? Have you ever felt embarrassed or not at ease in dealing with some productions that you found too disruptive?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">I think directors can and should push themselves as far as their imaginations can go WITHIN the bounds of respectful story-telling. If the story itself gets lost in a concept, I believe the direction is no longer serving the original vision anymore. I long for a time when all parties of the production are included in the artistic vision of the final on-stage product.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">You hold masterclasses, too. What do you think is important to pass on to newcoming singers?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">When I teach, I ask the student what they would like to fine tune because each person comes to the class with their own preparedness intact. The student may feel that they are weaker in areas of stage-presence or in their language\/diction. The singer may want help with getting through a phrase with enough breath. I allow them to ascertain these areas of need and we go from there. I don\u2019t like the same tactic being superimposed on varied types of singers. One path is for one person &#8211; not many. We must listen to what the student needs.<br \/>\nI think the most important thing to pass to newcoming singers is confidence in what they are bringing to the table. If we can help them stand erect and own their choices, they deliver what\u2019s inside them.
